COM-COM: totalitarian times in a nutshell
About
Com-Com is a role game that focuses on moments in the modern history of states of former so called „Eastern Block“ especially Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Germany. It is an educational program which informs students (mainly high school students) in an interactive form about the Communism period and what it was like to live under a totalitarian regime.
What comes to your mind when you hear the word Communism? The association with “standing in line for bananas” can be seen as a cliché. Unfortunately, the truth is that teenagers often do not come up with anything else. The COM-COM game is trying to change that perception. Its aim is to create several situations which almost anyone could experience under Communism.
The students themselves take an active part in situational problems which require making decisions, considering the alternatives and realizing possible consequences. The game is a suitable springboard for further teaching about the Communist regime during history classes.
