17. 11. 2010 Day of Freedom
About
NGO Opona will again remember milestone of our history November 17th, 1989. The Day of Freedom follows on last year event - 20 YEARS WITHOUT THE BORDER - A reason to celebrate!, when 20 thousands people met during the march from Albertov to Národní třída and at the concert at the same place. The stages for this year celebration are Rock Café and Mezzanine of New Scene of National Theatre at Národní třída.
This year celebration is going to be much smaller but we believe it is going to be dignified and symbolic. There are going to be two concerts in Rock Café - Polish legendary band ARMIA founded in middle 80´s and Czech band DIKTÁT. In Rock Café and in New Scene are prepared also projection of two documents - Polish documentary BEATS OF FREEDOM and first run of Czech documentary THE MAKING OF...
We believe we can create great atmosphere for open dialog about how the social and political situation has changed this year.

THE MAKING OF
First Night Performance
document
Czech Republic, 2010
Director: Jan Foukal
The making of... is high-flier reflection of turning of the spirit from Nov. 17th, 1989 until Nov. 17th, 2009. Movie reconstruction of revolutionary moments culminate by the violent conflict of protestors and „public security police“ in the day of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. Commented homevideo had changed from euforic trip to the image of social emptiness during the last 20 years. A game of revolution is welcome attraction of bashed bit players where freedom is voluntary given formule. Movie about movie are shivers about one perpetuity seen by the author.

Beats of Freedom: Or How to Overthrow a Totalitarian Regime with a Home-Made Amplifier
Beats of Freedom is a story about Polish rock music and independence. Narrated by British writer and journalist Chris Salewicz. This documentary film is a journey throughout three decades of Polish rock.
The Iron Curtain was not as impermeable as it may have seemed, Western music was available in Poland and sometimes even big stars visited the country, the outstanding example being The Rolling Stones' visit in April 1967. Those two legendary concerts had a huge impact on Polish rock music. Both took place in Warsaw's Congress Hall, located in The Palace of Culture and Science - a gift from the Soviet Union to the people of Poland. Paradoxically, this hated symbol of communist power became an important testimony to the history of Polish rock'n'roll.
The film's narration makes it an interesting and entertaining documentary. Chris Salewicz meets Tomek Lipinski (lead singer of the bands Tilt and Brygada Kryzys), Piotr Naglowski (manager and journalist), and Mirek Makowski (photographer and historian). Their stories are not only about the meaning of the music but also about Polish life under the communist regime.
