In 2009 the Czech Republic and other Central and Eastern Europe countries celebrated two significant anniversaries. It was 20 years since the bipolar division of the world came to an end, and 5 years since the Czech Republic and other post-Communist countries definitively confirmed their commitment to the path they had set out on after the fall of the Iron Curtain. On 1 May, we celebrated the fifth anniversary of accession to the European Union.
The aims of the conference were to look, with the benefit of hindsight, at significant events of 1989 and, through three panel discussions, to determine their impact on the European integration process. Czech and foreign guests addressed issues such as the role of the European Union and its expansion in the unification of Europe, the process of restoring democracy in Europe after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the prominence of civil society in this process, as well as the significance of a working civil society and democratic values for the functioning of democracy and preservation of the legacy of European historical experience.
The forum was attended by numerous important figures, including Ján Figeľ, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture and Youth; Olli Rehn, the European Commissioner for Enlargement; Alexandr Vondra, the Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs; Karel Schwarzenberg, the Minister for Foreign Affairs; Hido Biščević, the Secretary-General of the Regional Cooperation Council; Lee Edwards, Chairman of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation; and Vytautas Landsbergis, Lithuania's former president and a current member of the European Parliament.
